Saptrishi Kund/Yamunotri Overview A popular natural lake atop 4421 m, it is considered to be where Yamuna originates. Yamunotri (10600 ft) is one of the Chardham (4 holy pilgrimage) of Sanatan Dharma. Located in the Uttarkashi district in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand it lies near the Bandarpoonch Mountains (6315m). The Yamunotri temple marks the location of Yamuna River Goddess though its actual source lies 15kms above at Saptrishi Kund (18000 ft / 15000ft). The Saptrishi Kund which is a very hard and arduous trek involving nonexistent paths, glaciers and streams. The trek path is least explored and has some amazing rare fauna and flora of medicinal values. The ultimate gift is to be able to camp at Saptrishi Kund overnight. The waters of the lake have a darkish blue hue and the lake’s bank is strewn with naturally formed slate rocks.

Pickup all members by our company Vehicles from Dehradun center point, early morning. The drive is towards JankiChatti Via Hanuman Chatti (the last motor-able point) from where an easy uphill climb of 5kms towards Yamunotri temple.

Post breakfast start the trek to Yamunotri through Banas, Phool Chatti and Jan Ki Chatti. Yamunotri at an altitude of 3193 m is one of the Char Dhams which is of great significance to Hindus. It is the source of River Yamuna and the temple lies in a steep valley offering majestic views of Bandarpoonch peak. Before entering this temple are hot water kund, there devotees cook rice and a rinse of the sins. Reach Damini Camp site. Overnight stay & dinner.

Morning after Breakfast trek to Saptrishi kund, Saptrishi Kund. It is a glacial lake which is River Yamuna’s main source, lying high above the temple on Kalinda Parvat. The trek is a steep one and the gradient is difficult. Cross the difficult sections and from the top of high ridges get fascinating views of the unnamed long stretched alpine meadows.

Holy Saptrishi Lake lies amid rocky glaciers and is dark bluish in colors. It is fed by the melting water of glaciers around. The beautiful thing about the surroundings of this lake are Brahma Kamal’s and natural slate stones found on the banks. It is considered sacred because in ancient times 7 sages named Rishi Kashyap, Atri, Gautama, Viswamitra, Bharadwaj, Vasistha and Jamadagni performed penance here. Saptrishi Kund is about a half km in diameter, and its water is dark blue in color, The water of the nearby glaciers gathers in this lake. On the banks of Saptrishi Kund Lake, there are naturally created slate stones. The rare Brahma Lotus grows here. It is believed that seven great Rishis Kasyapa, Atri, Bharadwaj, Viswamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Vasistha performed penance at Saptrishi Lake in ancient times. Overnight Camping & dinner.

Waking up in the morning and taking some nice pictures of the Kund with the rising sun, it will be a wonderful experience. After taking the picture, sometime worship near the Shiva temple, it is a very enjoyable experience to experience worship in the quiet atmosphere of the Kund at 18000 feet. After spending some more time, you should leave as soon as you go back to Yamunotri / Janki Chatti. Late evening reach at Janki Chatti check in hotel/ Guest take some good hot shower. Overnight Stay & Dinner.

  • Trek Permits and Forest Camping Charges: Only for Indian Clients, All the applicable trekking permits, Camping Charges, Forest Entry Fee, etc will be paid by us. Foreigners have to pay these charges if not mentioned.
