Mt. Kedar Dome

Is a Popular Mountain for Climbing & Ski Ascent in the Spring Time

Kedar Dome (6831 M) is a mountain peak in the Gangotri Group of peaks in the western Garwhal Himalaya. Kedar Dome lies on a spur projecting towards the Gangotri glacier, two kilometers northwest of Kedarnath. It is located in the state of Uttarakhand 15 kilometers south of the holy site of Gaumukh- the source of the Bhagirathi River. Kedarnath is the highest peak on the south side of the Gangotri Glacier, and Kedar Dome is the third highest. Both peaks have relatively easy routes on their northwest sides, but the east face of Kedar Dome is a large, very difficult rock climb. We reach to Rishikesh and further to Gangotri from where we trek to Tapovan. Kedar Dome Base Camp is called Khara Patthar and is located at 16,000 feet. The trek is not long and the elevation gain is not great, but the air becomes noticeably thinner. Kedarnath and Kedar Dome were first climbed together, in 1947, by a Swiss team led by André Roch. Their route on Kedar Dome, the northwest flank, is still the standard route; it is straightforward and relatively low-angle, and is a popular ski ascent in the spring season.’

Expedition Itinerary

After breakfast drive to Gangotri Via Uttarkashi (1150 m). Gangotri is the starting points for this trek. Here you will meet your trekking crew and porters. In the evening, you will witness the puja and aarti at Gangotri temple – one of the four sacred dhams for Hindu in the Himalayas.  Overnight stay & Dinner at Hotel/Guest House

Our first day in Gangotri will be spent checking our equipment for Mount Satopanth, and the guides will demonstrate the workings of the equipment and how to use them.

The walk begins with gradual ascent through pine trees, alongside the roaring Bhagirathi River with towering cliffs on your left hand side. This trail keeps following the river and just short of Cheerbasa,  Beyond Cheerbasa the terrain becomes really desolate and barren. In fact, it has been referred to as Arctic tundra by some trekkers. We continue our walk and reach the campsite of Bhojbasa, home of birch (now only a few left in the much denuded area) and setup camp.Take an evening stroll to one of the high points close-by for better acclimatization of the body to the surroundings. We may get a chance to see a group of ibexes or capture a beautiful sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks and take a glimpse of the majestic Shivling peak. Overnight in tents & Dinner.

After breakfast, we begin our trek to Gaumukh, the source of the River Ganga where you see holy water gushing out from the snout of Gangotri Glacier. Continue further trekking by crossing over Gangotri Glacier and final ascent to grassy meadow of Tapovan – the base camp of Mt Shivling – on the east bank of the Gangotri Glacier. Tapovan is also the base camp for climbing Expedition to the stunningly beautiful Mt Shivling (6543 M). Enjoy the amphitheatrically view of Himalayan peaks from here. Total trek about 6 hrs. Overnight in tents & Dinner.

Early Morning move ahead to Kirti Glacier which will be our base camp for Mt. Kedar Dome expedition. Set up camp here and let your body acclimatize. Have dinner and retire for the night. Overnight in tents.

To aid acclimatization, we spend a day in the serene surroundings of Kirti glacier. After a relaxed morning, we go for a short walk to gain some height and then return for a hot lunch. Overnight in tents & Dinner.

Attempt the Peak Mt. Kedar Dome and return to Base camp. We do between two or three camps high altitude camps on the glacier.  Camp 1 5700m Camp 2 6300m  Kedarnath Dome (6831m) which is technically straight forward  offering spectacular Himalayan scenery.
