The Gupt Khal Trek is one of the most challenging and lesser-known expeditions in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Gupt Khal, meaning “Secret Pass,” is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, within the Garhwal Himalayas. The Gupt Khal Trek remains one of the least-frequented high passes in Uttarakhand. Since Frank Smythe’s pioneering crossing in 1937, only a handful of successful expeditions have been documented, with notable crossings in 2010, 2019, and 2023–2025. Inner Line Permit (ILP): Mandatory for routes approaching the Indo-Tibetan border, especially near Ghamsali, Niti, and Mana. Issued by the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) office in Joshimath; foreigners face additional restrictions and higher fees.
